Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has emphasized Ibadanland’s enduring influence on Nigeria’s socio-economic and political landscape during a courtesy visit to Olubadan-designate Oba Rashidi Ladoja, pledging support for his upcoming reign as the 44th Olubadan.
Obi’s trip to Ladoja’s Bodija residence on Sunday, September 14, 2025, highlighted the ancient city’s pivotal contributions to national development. Accompanied by Labour Party figures like Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Yunusa Tanko, Obi described Ibadan as a cornerstone of the country’s history, crediting its hospitable people for fostering unity. “The position of Ibadan in the history of Nigeria cannot be ignored as a home to all,” Obi said, noting Ladoja’s background as a former Oyo State governor and federal senator equips him to lead effectively. He committed to aiding Ladoja’s tenure, calling for nationwide backing to ensure its success.
Ladoja, whose ascension follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin in June 2025, viewed the role as an extension of public service rather than prestige. “I just see my appointment as Olubadan as another opportunity for service,” he responded, attributing his elevation to divine grace and stressing accountability over glamour.
The 84-year-old, a businessman and politician since the 1970s, has long championed community welfare, including education and infrastructure initiatives during his 2007-2011 governorship.
The visit, part of Obi’s recent engagements that included a stop at former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s Abeokuta home, underscored themes of selfless leadership amid Nigeria’s challenges. Obi reiterated that his outreach promotes equity and justice, aligning with Ladoja’s service-oriented vision.
